The way Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has transformed various industries, healthcare is no exception. On Wednesday, the Center announced the launch of its first-ever online AI course to train doctors with a foundational understanding of AI in the medical sector.

The course was developed by the National Board of Examination in Medical Science (NBEMS), which works under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Through completely online learning, the program focuses on the fundamentals of AI in medical practices, diagnostics, research, and clinical decision-making. The aim is to train 50,000 doctors across the country, helping them to understand that AI is not an option anymore; it is essential to boost the healthcare industry with the advantages of machine learning.

Anupriya Patel, Minister of State for Health, said, “The initiative is both timely and forward-looking.” While continuing her statement, she also added, “Such programs can facilitate a transition from reactive to more proactive and preventative methods to healthcare delivery in a nation facing a heavy load of non-communicable diseases and the ongoing problem of tuberculosis.

Why is an AI Training Course Important for Doctors?

Healthcare is the fastest-growing sector, and the adoption of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning enables faster and more accurate results, provides detailed diagnoses, and supports significant improvements in patient health. Moreover, Healthcare can transition from a reactive model to a more proactive and preventive one with the use of AI-driven solutions.

While emphasizing the importance of AI, she also raised concerns that, in order to ensure that technological breakthroughs improve healthcare delivery while protecting patient interests, the adoption of AI must be governed by the concepts of accountability, accessibility, and ethical use.

Patel also said that AI will transform medical education; however, it is not meant to replace doctors, but to enhance their capabilities, bridge gaps caused by shortages of medical professionals, and manage the growing patient load.

According to Dr. Abhijat Sheth, President of the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), the initiative reflects NBEMS's dedication to modernizing medical education and enhancing doctor capacity building.

As per the report, more than 42,000 doctors have already registered for the course. Such initiatives are essential for furthering India's vision of digital health, encouraging responsible adoption of emerging technology, and enhancing healthcare delivery.
