Who Was Srinivasa Ramanujan? A Mathematical Prodigy

Srinivasa Ramanujan was born on December 22, 1887, in Erode, a town in Tamil Nadu. His journey with mathematics began at a very young age. Despite limited resources for formal education and financial constraints, with his exceptional thinking abilities, he displayed an extraordinary talent for solving mathematical problems. He mastered advanced trigonometry by his early teens and went on to independently compile thousands of mathematical results.

His work mainly focused on number theory, infinite series, continued fractions, and mathematical analysis. These mathematical fields are used both in pure and applied mathematics, providing almost 3,900 theorems, many of which were later proven and further developed by mathematicians worldwide.

Origins of National Mathematics Day

On December 22, 2012, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh announced the National Mathematics Day at Madras University. To commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan, India observed National Mathematics Year to further promote mathematical research and education nationwide.

Since then, December 22 has been celebrated across educational institutions—from schools and colleges to universities—through mathematics activities, workshops, quizzes, and lectures aimed at fostering curiosity and appreciation for the subject.
