Over the past several years, online and distance learning have become the lifeline for millions of students in India, especially for working professionals and remote learners who wish to enhance their academic qualifications without joining on-campus regular courses.

Among other UGC-approved universities offering ODL programs, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is one of the most popular among students, empowering learners through affordable, flexible, and easily accessible distance programs.

However, recent updates on new regulations by the University Grants Commission (UGC) have raised serious concerns about the validity of certain distance-learning degrees—especially in specialized and professional domains.

If you are planning to enroll in an online or distance course from IGNOU or any other university, this is something you cannot afford to ignore.

Is IGNOU’s Distance Degree Valid?

Ever since the UGC released its new guidelines for online and distance learning courses, the academic futures of several students hang in the balance. The concern primarily revolves around specific distance learning programs offered by IGNOU, particularly in fields like psychology and other healthcare-related disciplines

Under the NCAHP Act 2021, healthcare-related courses require practical training and clinical experience to serve as a practitioner. Thus, UGC explicitly offers such courses through ODL mode; despite this, IGNOU continues to offer the MA in Psychology through distance modes and has invited approx 17,000 fresh applicants this year.

NCAPH Act 2021 & University Grants Commission (UGC) Directives

As per the new guidelines, the NCAPH Act 2021 stated that disciplines aligned with healthcare or related fields required clinical and practical training. Thus, distance degrees in such courses should not be considered as valid. To acquire expertise in such courses, learners should attend regular classes.

After that, UGC has directed institutions to stop offering courses, such as psychology, nutrition, microbiology, and biotechnology, through distance mode from the July-August 2025 session. It also warned that any degree that violates the term is rendered invalid.

IGNOU Stands on Such Conflict

As concerns were raised among the learners, V. P. Rupam, Registrar of the Student Registration Division at IGNOU, has defended the institute by stating that a list of students pursueMA in Psychologyfor academic knowledge, not professional practice. Also, he asked about the disclaimer that is included in the prospectus advising students to make informed decisions.

The UGC is tightening regulations to ensure quality and credibility in online education to ensure clarity for students and accountability for universities.

While institutions like IGNOU continue to play a vital role in education, students must ensure that their chosen course is recognized, compliant, and aligned with their career goals.

AtEducation Mitra, we strongly recommend making informed decisions by verifying course validity, understanding regulations, and choosing programs that truly add value to your future.
