Illinois Tech Becomes First U.S. University to Launch Degree-Granting Campus in Mumbai (UGC Approved)
With the growing globalization in higher education, the Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech) — a renowned U.S. tech-focused university is all set to open its first campus in Mumbai, India, in fall 2026. This is the first time a US-based university has received approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees locally.
With the scheduling of the first batch of students in the fall of 2026, the campus will be located at the Godrej Business District. By choosing Mumbai, Illinois Tech stated that the Mumbai campus will be the first U.S. university campus in India with independent degree-granting authority, approved under new regulations for foreign higher educational institutions (FHEI). Under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, India is opening up its education sector to global institutions, aiming to transform India into a global hub for academic excellence.

The campus spanned 90,000 square feet, which includes a modern classroom, lecture halls, advanced laboratories, research workspace, libraries, student recreation, and support facilities. With over 10,000 students and an alumni network, the university has a long presence in India. Following a formal ceremony at the campus, where Godrej & Boyce and Illinois Tech signed an agreement of intent to foster academic and institutional partnership, the announcement was made.
