Wondering about the 1-Year B.Ed program overview, eligibility, and universities? This blog has covered it all!
Previously, aspiring teaching professionals should pursue a2-year undergraduate B.Ed programto gain eligibility as a teacher and educator, having a bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject. As per the latest notification issued by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), the 1-Year B.Ed course is reintroduced in India, and it will commence from 2026 onwards in the selected colleges. The objective is to empower working teachers, post-graduate candidates, and learners who have a 4-year integrated degree in the relevant course (BA, B.Ed, BScEd, B.El. Ed). However, if you have a 3-year bachelor's degree, you have to pursue a 2-year B.Ed program from your desired UGC-approved university.

Those who aim to work as teachers, pursuing a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed), must gain industry-oriented skills and expertise. However, the students should think about why the duration decreases and what benefits they may have. In India, there are two types of B.Ed programs already existing: Standalone B.Ed (Duration – 2 years) and Integrated B.Ed (Duration – 4 years). The standalone B.Ed can be pursued by Bachelor’s degree holders, and the integrated B.Ed is open to 12th passouts.
Now we have a 1-year B.Ed program that can be pursued by postgraduate degree holders and 4-year integrated bachelor’s degree holders. The objective is to speed up the professional teacher-training program and provide academically qualified candidates with a faster route into teaching.
Earlier, the B.Ed program was of 1-year, but it was extended to 2 years in 2014 under revised regulations. However, the NCTE reintroduced a 1-year B.Ed course to empower teaching professionals.
The 1-year B.Ed is not open to everyone. Eligible Candidates should have completed a Master’s Degree with at least 50% marks or completed a 4-Year Undergraduate Degree with minimum required marks.
Students who have prior knowledge of the teaching profession or have complete diploma and certificated in teaching young minds, looking to upgrade their career, must choose the B.Ed course.
As of now, NCTE provides eligibility to a few universities that can offer a short-duration B.Ed program from 2026. However, in the upcoming years, selected universities may be introduced gradually to support the educational landscape with skilled professionals. Expected institutions may include:
