Visvesvaraya Technological University Orders Online Classes on Saturday, Conserve Fuel Amid West Asia Conflict
Visvesvaraya Technological University, one of the most reputed educational institutions in Karnataka, which focuses on engineering and architecture programs, has taken major initiatives for fuel conservation amid conflicts in West Asia.
In a significant move toward sustainable and student-friendly education. The university has introduced Saturday online classes, directed to constitute, affiliated, and autonomous 220 engineering colleges, that directly impact 3 lakhs. The objective is to reduce transportation expenses, fuel consumption, and minimize unnecessary travel for students and faculty members.
As per the official notice issued by the University, classes will be held through online mode on working Saturdays, which are the first, third, and fifth Saturdays. Students who are enrolled in four-year engineering and architecture courses offered by VTU must attend the Saturday classes online, avoiding unnecessary hustle.

The official circular issued by the University stated: “By the direction of the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, it is hereby informed that classes for students of Constituent, Affiliated, and Autonomous Engineering Colleges, Schools of Architecture, and University Departments of VTU Belagavi shall be conducted through online mode on all working Saturdays of the month (2nd, 4th, and occasional 5th Saturdays) with immediate effect and until further orders.”
While describing the initiative, Vice Chancellor, Professor S Vidyashankar at VTU says, “Because the first and third Saturdays are already holidays, conducting online classes on the remaining Saturdays means students can completely avoid commuting to campus. This will significantly save fuel and reduce air pollution.”
The executive committee approved a shift in the university's curriculum delivery model, which currently allows 40% of classes to be online. Moreover, it is also stated that, for now, only theory classes will be held online on Saturdays, while practical lab sessions will remain offline during weekdays.
